The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You"re playing the game, you"re fighting the bosses, you know the how -- but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.
Before the night elves" grand civilization covered the land of Kalimdor, before the troll empire fought the aqir, before the arrival of the titans, they ruled Azeroth. Throughout the cosmos and even on alien worlds, their presence can be felt. Implacable, corruptive, powerful, creators of madness and strife, even in defeat they may never truly be defeated. They exist on many worlds and in many forms, and wherever they exist, chaos, insanity and destruction always follow. They are the ultimate manifestations of the cthonic, the primordial forces of madness that underpin sane, static reality.
They are the Old Gods. And nothing can stop them.
 Harbinger Skyriss - The Arcatraz
It is a small matter to control the mind of the weak... for I bear allegiance to powers untouched by time, unmoved by fate. No force on this world or beyond harbors the strength to bend our knee... not even the mighty Legion!
Please note, there will be spoilers for Cataclysm in this post. Continue reading Know Your Lore: The Old Gods Know Your Lore: The Old Gods originally appeared on WoW.com on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 20:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

While the next novel in the Warcraft series, The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm has been available for preorder for quite some time, the book itself had no cover art -- until now. The artwork for the novel is available for viewing on Amazon, and while it"s been stated that this is preliminary artwork, it looks pretty official.
The Shattering covers the stretch of time between Wrath of the Lich King and the Cataclysm expansion -- what exactly happened to cause the scenery changes as well as the situational changes that lead to the events we"ll be seeing as we play through the new expansion. The book is written by Christie Golden, whose other works in the Warcraft series include Lord of the Clans, Rise of the Horde and Arthas: Rise of the Lich King. According to Amazon, the release date has been pushed back from the originally stated release date of Aug. 31, 2010, to Oct. 19, 2010 -- a little longer to wait than previously thought.
The cover image itself? A striking (no pun intended) image of the Doomhammer smashing into what looks like volcanic rock. If the cover art is any indication, Thrall is playing a major role in the book -- and Golden"s already shown us on more than one occasion that she"s capable of writing the character. Does this mean we"ll see more of Jaina as well? How about Varian? Unfortunately there"s no real summary of the book available just yet, but you can see the full cover image, as well as pre-order the novel, via Amazon.com. Wonder no more: The Glitch Hunters have arrived to show you the unspoiled areas of vanilla WoW in all their pre-expansion glory. Contrary to their name, The Glitch Hunters explore entirely on live servers with no exploits or trickery. They use simple tactics to gain access to difficult-to-reach areas, including Levitate, Slow Fall, vehicle mounts, Death Grip and the liberal use of pally bubbles. "We"re traversing the continents and documenting all the weird and unique landscapes and borked terrain before the Cataclysm revision hammer destroys them for good," explains Glitch Hunter Alyssa of Dawnbringer (US). For the final installment, Addons 101 will discuss the basics of user interface customization, where to find customization options, and some addons that can be very helpful when building your user interface. Trzeba przyznać, że twórczość Olibitha, jest nieco kontrowersyjna, ale przecież w Warcraftcie, również takich twórców trzeba. Jego dzieła często zajmują wysokie miejsca w różnych konkursach Blizzarda. Przykładem jest choćby „Beware of the Baby B”, czy prezentowane tutaj The Bountifull Chest i The Manatrinic. Warto też wspomnieć, iż często dzieli się [...]

That"s right, in addition to a faceless worgen and a gnome for scale, this image shows off Withers, the new noncombat pet available through questing in Darkshore in Cataclysm.
As Breanni of WarcraftPets points out, Withers is a relatively large noncombat pet when you first summon him and then shrinks over time, growing back to his full size when he"s near a body of water. (We had trouble getting him to do his emotes, although we did see him noticeably shrink several times.) Unlike the Teldrassil Sproutling, which he resembles, he"s got a worn, weatherbeaten look and the amusing size change process. Since he seems to be only available from an Alliance quest, he"s most likely Alliance only. No word on Horde-only pets so far, but we"ll keep an eye out. A new build of the beta has just been deployed, implementing some of the changes the developers discussed during the recently concluded chat on Twitter, as well as a slew of new spells and abilities. There are no official patch notes yet -- and it may take a while considering this is merely a beta build -- but Nihilum has cobbled together some of the confirmed changes and put them up as a work in progress. Everything is still being collated at this point, so keep checking this post for updates. Here are some of the interesting points from the patch so far:
Check out the rest of the changes after the jump. Continue reading Cataclysm beta patch notes build 12539 Cataclysm beta patch notes build 12539 originally appeared on WoW.com on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 01:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Good news, everyone! Your faction specific Icecrown Citadel buff is now 30%, meaning things just got a little more lenient in ICC. Now"s your chance to capitalize on the content in there to get alts ready for Cataclysm, finish off those drakes you"ve been lusting after, or just proudly wear that Kingslayer title. One of the more interesting facets of playing a game as extensive as World of Warcraft are the legends and mysteries surrounding the game, both inside and out. A lot of these legends, mysteries and unsolved puzzles have developed over time into urban legends -- stories that sound just true enough to be plausible, but usually end up being untrue, dead ends or simply unsolved mysteries that were never meant to be puzzled out. Today we"ll be talking about a weapon whose origins were so mysterious and carried so many loose ends that it left players in a tizzy for years: Ashbringer.
The legend of Ashbringer started when World of Warcraft was originally released. The orange legendary weapon was discovered in the game files by data miners, and the stats and proc on the weapon were truly amazing. At the time, even epic weapons were extremely rare, so seeing something with an orange tag on it was more than a little unique and awe-inspiring. However, other than the datamined weapon, there was no indication of it appearing in game -- that is, until players slowly leveled from launch to their first steps into the Plaguelands. From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW ? We"re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.
The popular saying about leading a raiding guild is that it"s somewhat like herding cats with a feather. Imagine then, if you will, tickling players through day-to-day game life amidst the friction of potentially volatile in-character roleplaying. Arialynn, the GM of <Templars of the Rose> on Earthen Ring (US-RP), leads an established troupe of roleplayers that"s spent the Wrath era not besieging Arthas but running medieval-style market days in Dustwallow Marsh. Headquartered in Theramore Harbor, the Templars most assuredly exemplify the road less traveled, both literally and figuratively.
What"s it like to lead a guild that spends more time tossing back stiff ones in the inn than it does wrestling with Defile before the Frozen Throne?
