Know Your Lore: The haunting legacy of Grom Hellscream

Filed under: Lore, Know your Lore

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You"re playing the game, you"re fighting the bosses, you know the how -- but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

I chose Garrosh because he has the strength to lead our people through these trying times. For all my supposed wisdom, there have been moments that I"ve barely been able to hold the Horde together. The Wrath Gate and Undercity displayed that clearly.

The Horde cries for a hero of old. An orc of true blood that will bow to no human and bear no betrayal. A warrior that will make our people proud again. Garrosh can be that hero. I did not make this decision lightly, Vol"jin.

I know our alliances will suffer for it. I know the Horde will be irreversibly changed. But I made this choice with confidence that Garrosh is exactly what the Horde needs. I"m trusting you and the other leaders to not let this divide our people. You are stronger than that.

Let"s just cut to the chase here: It was revealed in the press event information that Garrosh Hellscream, current Warchief of the Horde, will have his reign abruptly ended in Mists of Pandaria. The son of the great Grom Hellscream will no longer be Warchief, and it"s not only the Alliance that will be participating in his dethroning -- it"s the Horde as well. Though it may seem like a rash course of action, in all honesty, this has been coming for a very, very long time.

After all, he is the son of Hellscream.

What Comes After MIsts of Pandaria?

Well, Bliz is staying mum, but they are working on it. …the “general layout” for number five is already in place. “They’re [the] lore creators. They’re the ones who drive what the world looks like today and what it’ll be like tomorrow and beyond,” said Sims. “I think the future of World of Warcraft continues to [...]

Warlocks may cast green fire spells in MoP

Filed under: Warlock, News items, Mists of Pandaria

Warlock firing a Chaos Bolt at a ghost
Warlocks, think of the one thing you most want in the World of Warcraft. If you answered "the total destruction and removal of the mage class, and green fire," you"re in luck -- there"s a good chance that half of that statement will come true in Mists of Pandaria! Luckily for Christian Belt, it"s the latter.

According to EU CM Wryxian, Blizzard developers are looking into hopefully adding a quest line that will allow warlocks to use green fire in Mists of Pandaria.

Wryxian
Green "fel" fire for warlocks, like they"ve been asking for since... forever?

It is our hope to introduce a quest which will allow warlocks to unlock the use of green fire. :)

Remember that the key word here is "hope." Even the slightest possibility of green fire in MoP should have most warlocks salivating. This is especially true since Chaos Bolt, which is one of only two green fire spells currently in the game, has been removed from MoP talent calculators. Given that green fire has been one of the most requested features of the class for years and that MoP is an expansion bringing to us loads of vanity choices in glyphs and challenge mode sets, this seems an obvious way to go.

Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War cover revealed

The cover to the upcoming World of Warcraft novel, Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War, has been revealed, thanks to Scrolls of Lore. Christie Golden, author of The Shattering and Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects (among others), wrote Jaina"s story this time around. Of note on the cover is Jaina"s white hair, which has been said by Blizzard in the past to indicate extreme power or a physical embodiment of the horror of Theramore"s destruction. Could we be seeing Jaina flip out and go all white-haired Super Jaina Z? Is her white hair a mark of the trauma of seeing Theramore destroyed?

Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War is releasing later this year. Check out Scrolls of Lore for the full cover picture.

It"s open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft"s next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Look for expansion basics in our Mists FAQ, or dig into our spring press event coverage for more details!

Debunking the "WoW is better for online dating than dating sites" story

A story is making the rounds that WoW is a better for dating then established sites such as Match.com or eHarmony. It"s a feel-good story for those looking for love that warms the hearts of nerds everywhere reading about it on their favorite gaming sites.

The only problem is that the story really doesn"t hold up. The source of the story is an infographic that lauds the lovely pleasures of WoW and online gaming. But the makers of the infographic itself, the facts that are presented, and the sources of those facts are not very reliable.

Let"s debunk this idea.

Online university ... not really

The infographic was put together by a site called Online University, making its internet home at onlineuniversity.net. It sounds like a reputable place, right? A place where one could go to, say, get a higher education and learn something ...

Not really.

Does Garrosh Hellscream deserve to die?

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Lore

Likely one of the most contentious things to come out of the Mists of Pandaria press event was the news that we do indeed have a final boss for the expansion -- and it"s the current leader of the Horde, Garrosh Hellscream. Garrosh has been a figure in lore since The Burning Crusade led Horde players to Nagrand and introduced the younger Hellscream, an orc who had been raised thinking his father was the reason the orc race had been through so much suffering. This depressed him to the point that we players actually stepped up and took care of many of the problems surrounding the Mag"har village in an attempt to cheer him up.

But his true salvation came in the form of Warchief Thrall, who was not only gratified to find his grandmother alive and the name his mother and father intended for him, but happy to find the living descendant of one of his closest friends as well. It was Thrall"s words that finally broke the stupor of shame and depression that Garrosh had been living with for his entire life. And it was Thrall who took Hellscream under his wing, away from Garadar and to a land he"d never before set eyes upon: Azeroth.

How I made 3,000 gold by level 30

I rolled an alt a few weeks ago -- nothing special like the Ironman Challenge, but I had a moment where I wanted to level a character from 1 to 85 on another realm just for the heck of it. So I picked a random realm, medium population, and rolled a worgen. Why a worgen? Well, it had been a while since I"d played through the worgen starting zone, and since I"d recently seen just about everything the Horde had to offer on the 1-to-60 front, I wanted to replay the Alliance experience again.

So I rolled a worgen -- no heirlooms, no gold from outside sources, just me and the quests, like the old days of vanilla WoW. The most important part to me was that I was going to forgo buying any upgrade gear from the Auction House, instead using only what dropped from quests or instances. Call it a moment of vanilla nostalgia if you will, but that"s exactly what I had to do on my first character back in 2004, so I was going to do it again. I expected it to be tough; I expected it to take a while before I could even afford a mount at level 20.

I was so, so wrong. By the time I hit level 30, I had a little over 3k gold on my random alt, with little to no effort on my part. And I"m going to tell you exactly how I did it.

It all started with a pair of boots.

Addon Spotlight: A UI primer for returning WoW players

Each week, WoW Insider"s Mathew McCurley brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same.

World of Warcraft experienced numerous cataclysms over the last year and a half as Blizzard, the community, and everything in between had a weird hiccup moment. Mists of Pandaria seems to be shaping up to pull many lapsed players back into the World of Warcraft ranks, and the Scroll of Resurrection is a none-too-subtle way of facilitating that goal. Old players who thought WoW was down and out have been pulled back because of instant access to a lot of the features once reserved for the especially dedicated.

Last week, I gave you some tips on what to install on your brand new player"s game in order to facilitate a smoother first-game experience. This week, we"re going to address old players from all past eras of WoW"s lifespan and help them get back into the game without too many bumps along the way. It"s a very different game, but the core components are exactly the same. Blizzard correctly pointed out that when WoW"s got you and your character"s boots on the ground, the game works the best.

But first, before we begin with the article proper, I wanted to proclaim victory for the WoW community with regard to AoE looting. Blizzard has announced that AoE looting will be making the release of Mists of Pandaria, and I could not be happier. I"ve been championing AoE looting for some time now, and I want to send the happiest thoughts possible to the dev who got this feature on the launch list. You have no idea what types of quality of life changes that this will bring to everything from old raid farming to time spent waiting around in dungeons.

Have Group, Will Travel replaced with faster flight paths, flask "Chug-A-Lug" perk removed

We knew from the press tour last week that the current level 21 guild perk Have Group, Will Travel was going away. Looks like we now know what it"s getting replaced with: Ride Like the Wind:

Take it for what you will; I"m sure the reaction is going to be pretty strong. Blizzard has said that it wants people to get out into the world more and not have WoW just be a game where you sit in a city waiting for things to happen. This will certainly do that in terms of raiding.

The flask perk has also been removed, according to the list at Wowhead. It could appear as a perk in a later guild level (if that happens), but as it stands now, Chug-A-Lug isn"t in the beta. It"s been replaced with ... wait for it ... increased health from bandages with The Doctor is In.

Of course, this is the beta, so it all could change. Time will tell if this sticks or not.

[Thanks to Cutaia for the tip and our friends at Wowhead for the awesome datamining!]

Mists of Pandaria beta icon artwork

Filed under: News items, Mists of Pandaria

It"s still extremely early in the beta -- servers aren"t even live yet -- but goodies are already flooding in. MMO-Champion has posted a dump of many of the new art icons coming in this expansion. The art by itself isn"t necessarily news, but the file names of those icons reveal some fun (if minor) details about upcoming content.

For one, the icons include the names of the new ores and metals: Ghost Iron and Manticyte. There are also icons for new class spells such as the paladin"s Holy Avenger and the rogue"s updated poisons -- not to mention the icons for new gear, new achievements, and the pet types in the upcoming Pet Battle feature. The pet types appear to be critter, dragon, elemental, flying, humanoid, magical, mechanical, undead, and water.
