64-bit client still in beta, more information coming soon

There"s some confusion out there with regards to the 64-bit client, and while there"s not an official blue post today about it, there is a fair amount of information from previous blue posts from which we can put together a pretty accurate picture.

If you don"t know what a 64-bit client is or have no idea in general what I"m talking about, Mat McCurley wrote a good piece on what this is all about earlier in the month.

Jurannok (Support Forums)
People with 64bit systems will be able to run the 32bit client perfectly fine.

The 64bit client is entirely optional. It"s also still going to be in beta after it"s released to the live realms with 4.3.2. We"ll still be working on it further after the patch.

Jurannok (Support Fourms)
After the patch there will be more information about how to install it [the 64 bit client] and set it up.

So the 64-bit client wasn"t contained in the patch you all just downloaded; it"s still in beta. The client that"s available to download from the PTR forums right now doesn"t work with the live and patched servers -- it throws the "Unable to validate game version" error. We"re unsure exactly if Blizzard will be releasing a beta 64-bit client to use on the live realms today, but we"ve reached out to ask and will update if and when we hear back.

Tuesday Morning Post: Third time"s the charm edition

Filed under: Realm Status, News items

For the past few weeks, Blizzard"s toyed with us just a bit. Monday night bought a posted announcement of extended downtime, only for the morning to feature naught but rolling restarts. As of this writing, we"re once again starting with a 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. PST downtime announcement. Will it stick this time? I suppose by the time you read this, we"ll know.

Still, it"s a win-win situation. If I"m right, I"m right. If Blizzard changes back to rolling restarts, we get to play the game again sooner. In the meantime, there"s still stuff to read while the game"s down. The biggest news we"ve gotten out of Blizzard thus far has been one of negatives: BlizzCon is gone, at least for this year. This means we"ll have to party even harder in 2013, but what do we do in the meantime? For now, I suggest we catch up on reading. We"ve kept busy even with the dearth of news, offering guides and opinions you"ll want to read. While you wait for the servers to come back up, why not read on? Our usual roundup of the best stuff from the past seven days awaits.

The WoW economy code of ethics

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Fox Van Allen and Basil "Euripides" Berntsen aim to show you how to make money on the Auction House. Feed Fox"s ego by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or tweeting him at @foxvanallen.

There"s nothing more American than the idea of making money off the labor of others. Wall Street was built on it. Presidential campaigns are built on it. Even World of Warcraft fortunes are built on it. If you want to be a member of the 1%, you have to do it off the labor of the 99%.

The whole process sounds a lot more unethical than it really is. After all, just about any sale of a physical good involves someone else"s labor. You may have put a lot of work into building that lemonade stand yourself, but did you work the fields to harvest the sugar cane? And while you may be the one selling that Darkmoon Card: Volcano trinket, were you the one who collected the thousands of herbs and Volatile Lifes? Or did you visit the Auction House and profit off a farmer"s efforts?

Profiting off of others is simply how money is made. But we have a social responsibility to make money the right way. Without an in-game legislature or an in-game court system, what rules and laws should we operate under? As the engines of the World of Warcraft economy, what are our ethical responsibilities? How do we make money without causing social harm?

I am a killer of guilds

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Guilds

I have a confession to make: I"m a guild killer.

I don"t do it deliberately, I swear. See, back in vanilla, my raid guild lost pretty much all of its officers to EverQuest II right around the time Ahn"Qiraj-40 was coming into play. So the officers who were left (and the new guild leader) decided I should also be an officer -- and I agreed, which was probably the worst decision I"ve made in my life. Two weeks later, the guild was belly up and I was off trying out a roleplaying server for the first time, since I now had loads of free time to play an alt.

I figured it was simply the lack of leadership experience that had ultimately killed the old guild. The officers who had been promoted weren"t really officer material, myself wholeheartedly included. After losing most of our officer corps, the wind had gone right out of the guild"s sails, so to speak.

But see ... the trait of guild killing followed me after that. I couldn"t help it. And I began to wonder if maybe I am just a terrible, terrible choice for an officer.

The Ironman Leveling Challenge

People are always complaining that WoW is too easy, with the gear, the leveling nerfs, etc. It used to take about 6 days to get to 60, if you were fast and efficient and knew your way around the place. Now it’s about the same to 85. These days we have Heirloom gear, Guild perks, [...]
